Life had become busy\u2014between his leadership at Blys, the needs of his family, and the responsibilities of everyday life, running simply fell to the wayside. But a sense of unfinished business pulled him back to the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used to run half marathons,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Ilter recalls, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but I hadn\u2019t done one in about 10 years. Blys, family, life\u2014they all took priority.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d As part of his personal growth each year, Ilter sets three goals for himself: a physical goal, a financial goal, and an academic goal. He knew the road ahead would require not just physical endurance, but mental fortitude, discipline, and serious lifestyle adjustments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I signed up for the Sydney Marathon in September, giving myself nine months to get into the best shape possible,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d he explains. Training for a marathon wasn\u2019t just about clocking miles\u2014it involved a full commitment to nutrition, fitness, and recovery. Over the course of those nine months, Ilter lost 10 kilos through a combination of running, weight training, and improved nutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I developed a nutrition plan, cut back on coffee, and focused on getting enough sleep,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Ilter shares. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes weren\u2019t easy, especially the reduced caffeine\u2014I had to cut down over three months.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Saturdays and Sundays became his long-run days, while shorter runs filled his Tuesdays and Thursdays. Strength training also became a priority to maintain balance and prevent injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support his recovery, Ilter incorporated Blys massages into his routine. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The massages help relieve muscle soreness and keep me flexible, allowing me to recover faster after intense training sessions,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d he explains. This routine not only transformed his body but his mindset. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running early in the morning was like forced meditation,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d he says. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d get up at 5 am, and during those runs, I didn\u2019t think about work. It was just me and the road.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Balancing_Work_Family_and_Marathon_Training\"><\/span>Balancing Work, Family, and Marathon Training<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the demands of marathon training, Ilter never lost sight of his responsibilities as a CEO and a family man. The balance, he admits, wasn\u2019t always easy. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It required a lot of flexibility,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Ilter explains. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had to shift runs to the evening sometimes, or squeeze in training when work allowed.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, Ilter\u2019s family didn\u2019t just tolerate his running obsession\u2014they embraced it. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My wife Kristen and our kids have been incredible,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d he beams. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They cheer me on at every finish line, and they\u2019ve become my support crew.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ilter\u2019s children, Nico and Zeki have their own physical goals. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nico is passionate about surfing, and my older son, Zeki, is into rugby and skating. We set individual goals as a family, and we inspire each other.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristen played a pivotal role throughout his marathon journey, especially when it came to motivation. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She\u2019s the one telling me, \u2018You\u2019ve got this,\u2019 when I\u2019m dragging my feet or feeling unmotivated.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Whether it was organising post-race care, providing warm clothes and nutrition, or simply encouraging him during low points, Kristen was always there, ensuring he stayed on track.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Mental_Battle_Conquering_Self-Doubt\"><\/span>The Mental Battle: Conquering Self-Doubt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Ilter, running a marathon isn\u2019t just a physical feat; it\u2019s a mental game of resilience. Long-distance running, he says, is about managing your thoughts as much as your body. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a lot of self-doubt,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d Ilter admits. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to stay positive when you\u2019ve been running for hours, and everything in you wants to stop.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, Ilter participated in a 50k ultramarathon in the Blue Mountains\u2014an experience he describes as \u201csurreal.\u201d The scenic route, which took him through misty mountain trails, felt like something out of a movie. Yet despite the beauty of the landscape, the challenge was immense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was one of the most mentally demanding experiences of my life,\u201d Ilter recalls. \u201cAt some point, you start questioning everything\u2014why you\u2019re doing this, if you\u2019ll even finish. But you just have to take it one step at a time.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another unforgettable moment came when he ran a marathon in Canberra.
