Sciatica pain occurs when nerve roots that make up the&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sciatic nerve<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> become pinched or compressed. It starts in the lower back, follows through the hips and buttocks, and down the legs along the sciatic nerve pathway. Approximately 40% of people will experience a sciatic episode in their lifetime. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, it affects only one side of your body and can range from mild to severe. These may occur a handful of times a year.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Chronic:<\/strong> Chronic sciatica is a life-long condition. It doesn\u2019t currently respond well to treatment, but the pain from chronic sciatica is often less severe than the acute form.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_can_cause_sciatica\"><\/span>What can cause sciatica?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three of the most common risk factors for sciatica include your occupation, prolonged sitting (and these two are commonly related), and age.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Occupation:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Certain careers place a lot of strain on your back, especially those that involve lifting heavy objects, sitting for extended periods, or twisting movements.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Prolonged&nbsp;sitting:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>People who sit for prolonged periods or have a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to develop sciatica than active people are.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Age: <\/strong>Age-related changes in the spine, such as herniated disks and bone spurs, are among the most common causes of sciatica.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-21120\" src=\"https:\/\/getblys.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eugene-chystiakov-pPiRqSa9KiI-unsplash-1.jpg\" alt=\"sciatica\" width=\"2151\" height=\"1516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getblys.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eugene-chystiakov-pPiRqSa9KiI-unsplash-1.jpg 2151w, https:\/\/getblys.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eugene-chystiakov-pPiRqSa9KiI-unsplash-1-300x211.jpg 300w, https:\/\/getblys.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eugene-chystiakov-pPiRqSa9KiI-unsplash-1-768x541.jpg 768w, https:\/\/getblys.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/eugene-chystiakov-pPiRqSa9KiI-unsplash-1-1024x722.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2151px) 100vw, 2151px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>The two main causes of sciatic nerve pain are:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>A bulging disc or herniated disc: <\/strong>This occurs in the lumbar part of the spine when the soft jelly interior of a disc pushes out through a tear in an exterior disc.<\/li>\r\n<li><b>Piriformis syndrome<\/b><strong>:<\/strong> The most common cause of sciatic nerve pain. The piriformis is a triangular shaped muscle running under the glutes. Piriformis syndrome is caused by muscle spasm or tightness in the piriformis muscle which compresses the sciatic nerve. In most cases, the sciatic nerve runs directly under the piriformis. However, in about 17% of people the sciatic nerve goes straight through the piriformis muscle, causing greater susceptibility to sciatic nerve pain.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_test_for_a_herniated_disc_or_piriformis_syndrome\"><\/span>How to test for a herniated disc or piriformis syndrome<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing for herniated disc:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping a straight back, bend forward at the waist and then bend backwards. Is there pain? Does any movement of the back tend to make it worse? If so, this pain may be caused by a bulging or herniated disc. It is important to see your doctor so that they can diagnose this accurately and recommend the best treatment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testing for piriformis syndrome:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the piriformis very tender to the touch? This may be a sign of piriformis syndrome.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting down with a straight back, bring the ankle of the affected side up to rest on the opposite knee. Gently pull the knee of the affected side towards the opposite shoulder until you can feel the stretch. Repeat on the non-affected side to feel the difference.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lay on table face down with one leg draping over side of table. Bend knee and place foot at opposite straight knee (laying down tree pose), raise hanging knee up and down tightening the piriformis.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Massage_and_sciatica\"><\/span>Massage and sciatica<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage therapy helps alleviate sciatic nerve pain in several ways:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tight lower back muscles can place stress on your nerve roots. Massage therapy loosens these muscles and helps prevent pinching or irritation.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A massage encourages the release of pain-fighting endorphins which can provide temporary relief from symptoms like the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throbbing pain in your foot<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;or the burning sensation in your leg.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage promotes blood circulation which will ease sciatic nerve tenderness and built up tension.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage for sciatica won\u2019t cure the underlying cause of your pain, but it can help to relieve your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Another way of releasing those endorphins is massage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Easy_at-home_self-massages_to_help_manage_sciatic_pain\"><\/span>Easy, at-home self-massages to help manage sciatic pain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><strong>Palm and Thumb Massage<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Place the palms of your hands on your lower back.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rub the pelvic area towards your spine and down towards your buttocks.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, place your hands at your waist with your thumbs on the ropelike muscles near the spine. Wrap your fingers around your sides.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using your thumbs, apply a firm and steady pressure toward the spine on the outer edges of the ropey muscles, so that your thumbs are about four inches apart.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply pressure without causing discomfort.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><strong>Tennis Ball Massage<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put two tennis balls close together in a towel or sock.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit down on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Place the balls behind you.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gradually recline your body until you are lying on your back on the floor, with the balls on the sore area of your back. Rest in this position if you can for one minute.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the back tension is relieved, move the balls to another area of your back.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly roll onto your side into a comfortable fetal position u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sing your arm under your head (as a pillow). <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest in this position for five minutes before getting up.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><strong>Knuckle Pressure<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make fists and carefully place them on the left and right side of your lower back.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Position your fists so your palms are facing down and your knuckles are against your back.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your fists should be between the spine and your lower back muscles. <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest in this position if you can for one minute.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowly roll onto your side into a comfortable fetal position, using your arm under your head (as a pillow). <\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest in this position for five minutes before getting up.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Suggestions_for_pain_management_between_massages\"><\/span>Suggestions for pain management between massages<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot or cold packs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;to your lower back may provide temporary relief.
